the roads are no longer safe....b/c I turn 14 today - I can FINALLY get my permit! YYEESS!!!!!
I love driving, but now I can finally do it legally in town - assuming I pass the test you'd better watch out for the little chick in her own sporty little red eclipse!
yes, I have my own car - I was preparing for a future driving my parent's vehicle, but then lo and behold, my pastor gave his daughter's old car free! I am sooo happy - (sometime soon) I'll change my avatar to me on my car so everyone can see!

Our's is 16 for a Learners Permit, 18 for a Probationary License, and that last's 3 years, then you're on your full license.
But like most farm kids where I grew up, I was driving Cars, Tractors, Forklifts, even the Truck a few times, from when I was 10 or 11. But not out on the main roads, of course.
My Dad didn't have a license until he was 40 or so, when he was pulled up for a faulty tail light! Sucked in!
Both my Daughters can drive, and they're 11 and 12 right now. The eldest even did a reasonable solo stint, after she bogged the Car. I had to drive the Tractor back, after pulling it out, and she followed.
I've been driving since age 8 - stick shift and automatic!
that's what I like about South Dakota - you get your permit at 14, drive w/ and adult for 6 months (or 3 months if you take driver's ed)
then you get your restricted, where you can't drive before sometime early in the morning or past 10 at night. when you turn 16 you can finally get your full liscense!
I'm gonna have my mom drive me to the testing place - and I plan to drive home! yipee!

I'm wondering if you live in Rural area, where things are a bit more relaxed? All I know about SD, is that it's mentioned in Movies, and I think Cowboys live there! (Maybe it has 'Mesa's' as well?)
When I did my driving test, I had to back out of an ally using mirrors only, then a Hand Break Start, on the only hill in town, then back to the Station (police). All up I probaly drove 2km. A friend of mine, the policeman told him, "Just drive around the block a couple of times, I'll have the paperwork ready for you when you get back"!
Now, there's computer based tests, compulsory formal training courses, and curfews for new / young drivers! Where I am at the moment, it's practically unheard of for kids to drive. In fact, many people don't get their license until in their twenties.
I live in Pierre (the capitol of SD) but I visit my grandparents ranch often, and get a lot of time out in the country. Pierre is pretty small too, so some of my friends even drive in town without their permit!
my mom almost let me drive in town w/ out my permit the other day - she freaked me out! but we were scared that a police would see us so I ended up not driving.
If I figure out how, I might post a pic of me on my car....

WELL DONE Layne @ passing test
if i may offer one bit of advice ... when crossing and entering junctions be just that extra bit vigilant to check that they are no motorbikes approaching or entering the junction as they are much harded to see than a car. plus u never know one of them might have me riding it

that place is crazy - motorcycles are everywhere. once when we (my parents sister and I) were driving away ftom there, we counted the number of motor cycles going to Sturgis - we stopped at 300 (and there were a lot more!)
Fishypaw, I'll be sure to watch out for you altho this time of year there aren't many motorcycles going around here.
