Here are a couple of pics of my Daughters Guppies. She's been breeding them for 3 or so years now. She started with a male leopard fan-tail, a male purple veil-tail, and an orange/yellow female.

You can see in this first pic, a spinal kink in the yellow female. This is probaly due to in-breeding. We've had a few spinal deformities, most seem to live out a normal life. We've had Hunchbacks, and Boomerang shaped.

Above and below, you can see the Blue which She has been line selecting for. Even the large female below shows a faint tint of blue.

We've only really had two colors in the females. A drab silver grey with some color in the tail, like the large female above. And yellow bodied with orange tail, as in the first pic. The males, funny enough, prefer the drab females!

We haven't really kept any proper records, but have often noted how attributes skip a generation or two. And occasionally something will pop up, and we think 'yeah, that's come from so-and-so, a couple of generations back'. She can actually look at these fish and name them.

Domo Arigato.

The previous batch of Guppy fry are just now showing their colors. We could see a couple of spots of blue this evening. Cathryn is very pleased.

I'd like to have some guppies someday when I have room for another 10-gallon. We had some when I was a kid and of course they bred like bunnies, but from what I remember, the females seem a bit more colorful these days than they used to. Those sure are beautiful. What do you guys do with all the offspring when they grow up?

At the moment we've 40 odd in our Main Tank. There are under 20 juveniles in the Breeding & Fry Tank. I've yet to trim the Main Tank plants and see what Fry we have in there.

We started out with the kids asking me about fish babies. I thought Guppies would give a good demonstration. I let the kids pick out two colorful males and a female. And so it goes...

It seems half and half, as to wether we give them away to friends (and friends of friends), or swap them at the outlets for other fish. We've a couple of outlets who like what they see, and've said they'll take our fish anytime.

Here's an almost decent pic I took by accident (I was actually going for that blur under his 'ol fella when he swam in front!), but it does give a good representation of the sort of finnage Cathryn is getting with the Males. The 'Snake-skin' pattern on the body has come from the original Male Leopard Fan-tail, who was yellow and black, and it often skips a generation or two. You can also see that tell-tale blue, so he'll most likely be one that stays home with us.

It's a pity we don't have room for a dozen breeding tanks. You could do some amazing things over a two year period with a fish like this, and a bit more control than with our efforts. Such as isolating a Male to breed with it's Mother, to lock in a trait. Takes a bit of patience to segregate, wait several months for maturity, then select who has a trait worth keeping.

a while ago i bought 2 males and 2 females. one pair was mostly white with gold in the tails while the other pair where mostly black with white heads and silver in the tails.

the adults have since been sold on but i now have one white and gold female and one male that is black with a white head. the black one doesnt seem to be developing the silver in its tail like its father had but instead it has red 'go faster' stripes running laterally along its body and head Smile

i hope to cross the black and red with the white and gold. will post pics at a later date when i have some.

i have never seen the bad effects of inbreading myself, but i do tend introduce new males and or females now and again to help stop this.

Well, I'm assuming it's inbreeding. It could be naturally occuring deformities. We're probably only noticing it, because we're observing such a quantity of births.

I bred guppies for food. Everybody tells me that is mean, but it is the natural order of things to me. One day my friend thought it would be funny to throw in my Texas Cichlid in my breeder tank, and next thing you know i have absolutly no more guppies, and one very fat Texas Cichlid, Of course he then got constapated, then got dropsy from the stress, so was in a qt tank, when he got healthy again, i stuck him back in, my midas got used to being alone and killed him! I guess you could say that is Karma I miss tex he is probably going to be my next tattoo. Those guys are very pretty though, and i love the experiment of isolating the color variations, very cool.

Things are a bit quiet now, they're not as prolific. Probably the extra Angels aren't helping anything.
