I foung a nice 35 gallon tank at the dump on Saturday. I've filled it with some water to make sure it doesn't leak, and it seems to hold water just fine. I don't understand how people can throw out perfectly good things like that. The tank had some colored gravel that I took out. Now I just have to decide what to do with the tank. I was thinking it would make a nice breeder tank, or maybe a cichlid tank, but then I'd have to get a new filter, heater, and everything else. I didn't want to use it for hermit crabs, since I only have 4 left and the 10 gallon is big enough for them. I also need to find space for it and a stand in the basement if I use it for fish. There's so many choices, and multiple problems to go with each choice. Anyone have any ideas of what I could do?

Fish, fish, fish thats what i would go for, now the hard bit (choosing what to put in is yours ) now you could set it up as a species only tank, a breeding tank, a biotype etc etc, the choice is yours. I think you need to work out how you would like to set it up and then what with. Then when you have some ideas let us all know Remind me what fish do you already keep ?

I already have corydoras, gouramis, tetras, danios, loaches (I think. I have a feeling they all died over the summer though), a pleco, a raphael catfish, and I think that's all. I probably won't be able to put more fish in the new tank, since my parents said I have enough fish. Maybe I could just use it as a breeder tank. I already have a sponge filter that I don't use for anything else. Then all I'd need is a heater. Maybe I could fill it only part way so I could keep it on the table next to my aquarium. The biggest problem I have is where to put the tank. If I can find a spot for it, then everything else should be easy. I could use it as a beeder tank until I can find a better use for it.

Well in that case i would use it as a breeding tank, all you need to do now is get a heater for it and work out which fish you want to have a go at trying to spawn

Anyhoo, I'm sure you'll figure it out. Mmmmm...let's see...move some out of a smaller tank or make room in a more crowded tank. Just some silly suggestions because I feel guilty about being MIA. Consider it my 2 cents. Forgive me?

I used to have 7 hermies at one time. I would have had 8 had one not died earlier. However, before I left to Finland this summer, one of my Es died. Then when I returned from Finland, I found that two more crabs (one E and a PP) had died over the summer. Now I only have one E and 3 PPs. All my crabs are buried right now except for the E, and even it is acting quite lethargic. I would get more, but I haven't had a chance to get to a pet store lately, and my mom probably would not be happy. I don't think I'm going to be getting more pets for a while though, since it can be difficult to care for them. The more pets I have, the more work my dad has to do while I'm in Finland for 6 weeks in the summer. I should also probably fix up my tanks before I add more animals into them. I'm in the middle of upgrading my 50 gallon tank. My dad's helping me make a new plexiglass lid for the tank, and I'm planning on getting a new filter and a striplight. My hermit crab tank also needs upgrading. It's pretty bare currently. I should probably fix that up before I get any more crabs in it. So maybe after I've finished my other projects I could start on my new tank. Then again I'll be going to college in a few years, and I don't want to leave all my pets behind, so that's another problem I have to sort out too. I guess I could not get any more pets until I have my own house, but that's such a long wait. ugh... there's so many choices.

What i cant understand is we have a few members that have hermit crabs, but nobody has posted any threads on them Why not ? It would then possibly help me know what you are talking about, when you say Es and PPs

Oh, I'm sorry. It's just that a few of the members here are from a hermit crab forum that I'm also on, and E and PP and the like are common terminology there. I didn't mean to confuse anyone. I never thought of making a thread about hermit crabs either since this is a fish site. I guess a hermit crab thread could go in the wecome section since then it wouldn't matter if it was off topic. E (ecuadorian) , PP (purple pincher), ruggie, cav, indo, and straw are just some nicknames for different species of land hermit crab.

Oh yeah... even though land hermit crabs really have nothing to do with freshwater aquariums.... but oh well, I guess it doesn't matter.

Today I was in our garage attic and I found a big powerhead that my dad had used many years ago to make a bottle washer. I remember using it when I was 8 or so to aerate the water I had in my tank (which was outside back then) to keep the catfish and tadpoles alive. I had completely forgotten about it until now. My dad said I could use it if I want, so maybe someday I could put it in my new tank. Maybe I could make a river tank or something. That would be a cool project. I've always wanted hillstream loaches, so maybe I could eventually get some.

Powerheads are very good for inclusion in a river tank as they can be used to put a force into the water You just know your gonna set that tank up sooner than later

I tested out the power head today and it is powerful. I'm not sure what brand it is though I think it's a Hagen since it looks similar to pictures of other Hagen powerheads I saw on other sites. All it says on the side is powerhead 802 and made in Italy. It's meant for undergravel filters. There's a green switch to change flow direction and a yellow switch to control flow. The only thing is that the yellow switch broke off today since the plastic was brittle, but I can still change the flow rate. My new tank project is slowly unfolding. I just hope I'll be done before I have to college.

On another site I found some more info for a newer version of the same model. - Output without air: 1514 L / 400 U.S. gal per hour
- Output with air: 1324 L / 350 U.S. gal per hour
- Reverse Flow: 662 L / 175 U.S. gal per hour
- Recommended Aquarium

I don't have the venturi for it though, but I guess I don't need one. It's susposed to be more powerful without one anyways. I could always just make a new one too.

I have 2 802s in my 135 gallon along with a 501. It is a Hagen Aquaclear powerhead. About the venturii, I put airline tubing in the orifice and hook it up to a pump. My tank is deep enopugh that air can't be sucked down far enough. You can take it apart and readjust the yellow flow switch manually. These are the biggest powerheads that Hagen makes. One more thing, don't turn the green/red switch too far to the red side. There is a vent on the back that opens when it's red and it could suck your fish to it and kill them.
