There's five DIY Topics here that I know of.
I've another two, pending my taking photos. Three if I ever get that blue 'night-lite' thing done.
Speaking of which, I've found a circuit for boosting Fluro lighting by +75%. When I figure out the specs, my fishies will need sunnies ! I may get those red plants back up and growing again.
Unsure of the heat output tho'. May need to grab an old PC fan.

i made my own moonlighting with 2 x 12" cool blue neon tubes that i got cheep from ebay. it looked good and i used to use it quite a bit, but i have stopped using them for a while now as i think they were contributing or possibly even causing blue green algae. since i've stopped using them the BG is gone from all tanks but one.
i'd recommend anyone using moonlights puts them on a timer and doesnt use them for any more than an hour or so a night. based on my experience.

not black lights. the colour they give off is probably best descibed as violet but when it hits the water it does look a lot like moonlight, i,e, pale white.
i could be wrong about them contributing to BG algae. I was conluding that it wasn't so much the colour that was contributing to an algae bloom but just the extra hrs of light, even if it is low wattage. again im guessing tho.
if i was going to try n give parent fish some night time light to guard their babies, i'd just leave a small lamp on sat next to the tank. partly based on experience and also i recon u can position a small lamp next to the 'nest' and hence not light up the whole tank and also i dont think a tungsten lamp is as likely to cause algae growth.
