It's been for the last 2 weeks he has been near the surface and in a corner. This isn't his normal behavior. He doesn't go crazy for the veggies like he used to. He has a round belly and is gasping. I added some aquarium salt (20%) to see if that might aid him in a bowel movement if he's bloated and to help with gill function. Does anybody have any suggestions?

hi funky nice to see you back on the boards Very Happy sorry to here your L190 (royal) aint feeling himself, Sad have you changed any thing in the tank i.e. decor ? or changed the decor around ? added any new fish ? changed the feeding regime ? by this i mean have you changed how you feed now, remembering that you had a loss Crying or Very sad which was deceided as to much protien in the diet, but as daft as it seems you can also cause problems by just feeding A food.
have seen the water stats you have posted Very Happy (cant fault you on your water, and wish every one that has a problem would do the same)
remind me what filtration do you have in the tank ?

I did change the feeding a bit. I think thats what the problem is. I was doing some reading on bloat and it can be caused by not feeding a varied diet. Its called 'boring diet syndrome'. So I have changed the feeding again. I was feeding OSI Vivid Color with veggies and this happened, so I went and got some OSI Spirulina flakes and mixed them with the Vivid Color. LOTS of cucumber, zuchini and squash. I got my Q tank up and running last night so I may put him in there and give him an Epsom salt bath to help with his bowel movements (or lack thereof).

Filtration is an Emperor 400, Magnum 350, 2-802 powerheads, 1-501 powerhead, powerheads have quick filters.

that was one of the reasons i asked about the feeding regime, i.e. bloat can be a tricky one to sort out at times but yea i would go with the hospital tank and use the epsom salts in the hospital tank, i take it you know the doseage to use ?
p.s. is he/she still pooping ok ?

I've got an idea of the dosage. I haven't seen him poop in a while. I wanted to make sure the tank was a stable temp. I will be putting him in the Q tank tonight.

Bloat is due to not pooping and the reason why I'm going to treat with Epsom salt. Its a natural laxative.

Bloat can also be an internal infection, but i doubt that is the problem with you plec, they rarely get such infections, but can be treated with medicated food (wich i think is stupid seeing as how with infections they don't eat period.) I have lost a great fish due to bloat, constipation, and maybe the infection and it was freeking horrible for me so i now regularly roll food in garlic, and feed them that. Garlic is awsome for tummy problems. Just my .02

How do you prepare the Garlic, in which to roll the food ?

I put him in the Q tank on friday and I got to look at him a little closer. He had ich, so I treated for that as well as Epsom salt (2.5 TBSP for 20 gallons) and I went easy on it because I didn't want to stress him any more than he already was. The light has been kept off except to check on him. He doesn't have any more ich, but I'm still treating for it. I will do a water change tonight to rid the tank of some of the epsom salt so I can have an easy transfer back to the 135 gallon when its time. I will try and feed him tonight as well.

Don't have to prepare, they have a powdered glaric they sell at lfs works great, Wet a baby snow pea (that helps the tummy too) roll it in the powdered garlic and throw it in.

He looks better. His tail looked different than I remember. It turned white, but not like a fungus. Kinda like mold looks when it first starts on bread. Thats the best way I know to describe it.

He didn't touch his food (squash and zuchini) last night. I added some melafix and pimafix today. His belly seems to be shrinking a little bit.
