Okay, I have 3 neon tetras and some other tetras in a 10g aquarium. There is one neon tetra that has always had a faded red stripe. I recently noticed a white spot of the small fin in between the dorsal fin and the tail fin. I treated with fungal treatment according to the instructions. The spot faded somewhat, but now I notice another spot, but this time in the spot right before where the tail fin starts. Should I treat again? BTW, the tetra also has a bit of nipped fins.

Is the Fin Nipping where the 'spots' are appearing?

How large are the spots? Do they appear on the body at all?

I assume that no other fish are showing the symptoms. He's not an 'old' fish (faded stripe)? A faded stripe, and fin rot, may indicate an advanced stage of Neon Tetra Disease. Does he swim ok? How's his eating, does he look well fed?

You don't want other fish taking a nip! And if he's going down this path, you don't want him in your tank...

Hopefully just a Fungal problem, but observe them all carefully, check for those symptoms.

i agree with Kana and Clunkster, more info and pics would help.

i have just one comment, not regarding the fish but to do with Silent Doh's signature ... "If I had a bigger tank, my life would be complete", i find from my experience and others that ... if i had a bigger tank, i'd soon want an other one

Wink

good luck with the neon

I'm afraid the little fella died today, before I took him out of the tank, I noticed his tail seemed "bent" to the side a bit. Also, one of my other tetras is starting to get the same simptoms (sp?). This one does not have growth on it, but the red part of the tail became darker, with small black spots on it. Now what?
*edit* Could it be Neon Tetra Disease?

...i just had a quick look myself and it sounds as though it may have been neon tetra disease but i'd still say have a look urself and maybe check other diseases to see if it was something else or maybe a combination of things.

It might be neon disease, but I'd also consider fish

. It doesn't say so on that info page but fish with it can also get bends caused by the spine deforming (kink near the tail or a hump back from memory at least).

a link with a bit of info on neon disease to see if the symptoms fit as well.

Spinal curvature is a symptom of Neon Disease. But Doh, you need to pass on all of your observations. Eg, what was the state of the Fish between when you first mentioned it, and when it died? Behaviour, and other physical symptoms. Also, what identical symptoms is this next Fish showing, what different symptoms if any? What was the time-lag between the two showing symptoms?

One crook fish is nothing, stress, old age, whatever. Two crook fish, same symptoms...Research time, ready for action. If you get to three, watch out! Most of these disease's lie dormant until the fish is having a bad day. So check out your water quality. Every test you have. If you don't have it, take a sample to your Aquarium. Just make sure everything is optimal.

Monkeh's correct in pointing out that Fish TB has similiar symptoms. In any case I'd suggest one of two immediate course's of action. 1. Get the sick fish out of your tank asap, possibly into q'tine. 2. Euthanasia.

I'm still tending toward Neon Disease, even if just because it's more common, and also it hit your Neon's first. Probabilities. Q'tine, treat with Toltrazuril, if you can get your hands on any.

However, be aware that Fish TB is transmittable to Humans. If you have any cut's or sores, wear gloves, or use your Net as much as possible. And careful with that Siphon!

Monkeh: I'm going to add your link to our Helpful Disease Sites.

Near the end of the 1st neon's life, it hid in a little crevice in the driftwood, away from the other 2, which had normal behavior. I also noticed that now that another neon has it, the last one is picking on it like they did to the 1st one. Unfortunately, I do not have a good iso for it. I do have a 1 gal tank with UG filter & air pump, all I need to do is add water. (I have well water and do not have clorine in my water). The temp. in the iso would be 70 w/out heater

70's not too bad. It's at the lower end of thier range. You could take water from your main tank, I don't think that'd be a problem at this point. And it may alleviate some strees.

If the 2nd Tetra is being picked on by the 3rd, that's a worry. The Spores are picked up via the digestive tract. Note that other fish are also susceptible, not just Tetras.

Have you checked out any other links? What are your own thoughts on the diagnoses?

I'm afraid a picture is out of the question because a. they won't stop movin and b. my camera stinks at close ups. I will try to move the neon into iso. Unfortunatly, the iso is my brother's, and he may not like me using it. I hope he understands. I hope the little guy pulls through. Crying or Very sad

I'm actually quite surprised he's still going!

Is he improving, worsening, or the same?
