Has anyone ever taken a look at the old Flora and Fauna books from back in the Tall Ship days?

Ever noticed anything about the style of those drawings?

Has anyone got any idea what I'm talking about? Comment on this image above.

Yeah, a philosophical discussion, with two aims.

To see if anyone with the knowledge I allude to, shares the wonder / interest / appreciation of it.

And to surprise those not in the know, who've probably never looked at it from that angle.

So if I haven't given too much away, it's a sort of 'tease' thing. I like to see a few responses first, give people a punt at it.

Well, it may mean nothing to many people.

There is a huge difference, traditionaly, between how the Westerners depicted (amongst other things) Fish in their artwork, in comparison to the Eastern tradition.

And it really stands out in the older paintings, drawings, etc.

I'll come back with a couple of good examples...

Curse my brain! Sorry, I'd forgotten to come back to this.

No, it's very philosophical, and along the 'East meets West' sort of thing. Go back to the top. The attitude in the 'recording' of this information.

I've found the pics I was after, this morning. I'll pop them up shortly. They're from a collection of largely 1800's drawings.

Anyone just caught on? Or were you on the right track?

mmm, philosophy is one of my things but i'm not sure what ur alluding too.

could it be that that the western diagrams look like the fish are dead and on slabs where as the eastern ones are of live fish in their environment? very Taoist.

Hmmm...

Two of those wetsern fish seem to be on a crash course with a couple donuts.

Anyway - what fishy said. The western ones look pretty clinical. Also the eastern ones seem to have emotion on their faces - in the eyes too.

That's it, on the button !

A totally different perspective to what they were trying to record.

so the main differance in styles is one is trying to make the fish seem as though they are alive in the drawing Cool
