I've been trying to find some online info about finding & curing your own driftwood for aquarium use. There seems to be relatively little info on it.

Does anyone know......

What types of woods are okay?
How to get it ready? (I've heard long boils and a couple weeks of soaking)

Any other advice?

I believe there are a couple of species that are not suitable for tanks. Unfortunately I don't know them. I do remembers Mats, over at Planet Catfish, mentioning one or two, a few months back.

I've been collecting some dried branchs and logs from around the creek. But these have been out there for so many years, there's no threat from the wood itself. I just hosed off the Spiders and their egg sacs.

Driftwood tends to be the same. A proper piece of driftwood, has had everything leached out of it. All you need do is soak the salt out.

boil, soak, and test the water. plus be vigilant not to take the wood from anywhere prone to bad polution. hard woods are better than soft ones.

if ur still not sure, test the wood in a tank with some cheep replaceable fish before moving it into the main tank.

good luck.

i almost knew i'd get a comment regarding that. it is a reasonable comment, but to clarify, i am almost buddhist in that i dont like to kill anything and hate if a fish dies, but i ouwld rather take the chance of testing the wood on a few easily and cheeply replaced blue neons than on one of my more beloved fish, if u know what i mean.

Ok Fishy...

What is it that I want to test the water for?

I have a LOAD of great looking wood that I have scrubbed, boiled & scrubbed again with a wire brush. It's soaking now to waterlog. I'm so psyched! Got some neat looking pieces.
