This thread cut from 'Camera Talk' - Kana

Guys i'm slightly off topic here, but i'm really interested in this thread
and i'm just wondering why you guys haven't got a fish pic forum?
where threads like this could be easily accessed by interested parties,
and people could post pics of their fish and ask for comments,
just my 2 cents guys , keep the thread going, great stuff. Wink

Another Aaargh!

Don't you start! I think someone mentioned that same thing a couple of days back, actually. Um, I guess I can be shot down, weighed under by numbers, etc, but my view is...

I feel that the pics are exactly where you need to find them. Under the Species section, with usually a lot more meaningful content than "Great pic - nice fish!".

I would encourage Members to not slap 8 pics in one post. But perhaps spread those 8 pics over 4 or so posts, each post with some detail relating to that species. Wether it be something on that fish's personality, or how that Member encourages breeding, what they are fed, how they live (with cave shot), or for the more adventurous, detail on the origins of that species, or just to request an ID. And don't post them all in one session. Spread it over a couple of weeks, and enjoy a more solid response.

Honestly, I have trouble trying to come up with a worthy response to straight out Photo Album Posts. Particularly if I see them, one after the other. I like to be able to 'latch' onto something, and rattle off half-a-dozen questions. It makes for an interesting thread.

However, I believe our slowly developing 'Species Profile' will lend a bit to that desire, as it will be 'illustrated'? What's the term???

The only reason i suggested a forum for fish pics is because
it is so popular on other forums, usually in the top 3 forums. Smile
But hey it's your forum and if you think the pics are better in
thr regular forums that's cool by me, but remember there is
nothing to stop people adding a pic to illustrate a post and
still have a pic forum, lol
Ok i've said way to much sorry for waffling on so much, Smile

Nuh, that's ok. I'm just stupid in that way, sometimes.

My way of seeing it is, I want to know about Cichlids, I go to the Cichlid section. I want to ask a Catfish question, I go to the Catfish section. I want to know what a Female Betta looks like, because all I've ever seen is Males, I go to the Anabantid section.

Anyhow, Bettina makes the big decisions. The Aquarium Chat is probably the most suitable forum at the moment, for haphazard fish pics.

maybe we should look at doing a picture forum at a later date when we have the forum up and running and looking how bettina wants it and when we have more members that want to post pictures unless the majority want it now you could run a poll on it Wink

While we're on the subject, if anyone would like like to comment on some of my 'proposed'

, they'd be most welcome.

Note, I haven't done a 'full' dress rehearsal, I don't see the point of doing all the work, when I have to re-do it here anyway.

But anything like 'could that be darker', 'make that bigger', 'that's spot on!', 'is it possible to do this?'....

The animations are NOT intended to go everywhere, as I think that's a bit tacky. I envisage no more than what is shown (2-3), but have a pool of say 12 variations, that are rotated every month, just to keep things fresh.

And also, anything that looks really wacky, is probably just my trying out an idea, and may not be an element intended to bring over here.

Off the top of my head, what we have in motion / planning is:

The Aquatic Babble 'Style' (see above),
The Species Profiles,
The FAQ (with cross-referencing),
Reciprical Banner section (to enlist Members).

Perhaps it's time to visit the 'fish foto's' again.

I haven't tested out this feature as yet, but I'll try to do it justice in description.

You've seen the scrolling text in the forum description. Imagine a filmstrip, separate images, continuosly scrolling across that description space, no gaps.

When you pass your mouse pointer over the film strip, it stops moving.

When you click on an image you like the look of, it takes you to the Topic, where that image was originally posted, in full size.

So in essense, we have a sort of "Best of" collection.

Does that sound worthwhile?

Having now had a couple of days to ponder, I may implement a bastardised version, that includes a sort of 'Pic of the Month' type of thing.

So, scrolling thumbnail images.

Clicking a 'normal' thumbnail, takes you to a location within Aquatic Babble. These being the 'highlights' of our Forum.

Clicking on any 'other' thumbnail, takes you to the 'pic of the month' section. This is the actual forum beneath the scrolling thumbnails. Here is the cream of our combined camera work. Or maybe this whole section becomes the Members Gallery.

Eventually 'Pics of the whatever', would have a dual spec sheet. Fish & Tanks specs, with optional banter. And where available Camera & settings specs.

And it paves the way to a full-on Photo section, if people percieve that 'Aquarium Chat' is not adequate (eg it doesn't have the word 'photo' in the title!).

Well, the Photo section is now in place, and I'd hazard that most of you have noticed the scrolling Slide Show.

1 ) Slideshow. Any image, when clicked takes you to the original Topic in which it featured. Does this seem an adequate feature ?

I've tried to get some really outstanding images in this, but if you feel I've missed any in my rush, please provide me with detail, and I'll add it. I have 12 at the moment, I want to get it up to 20 asap.

2 ) Photo Gallery forum. I guess I just let you guys go crazy in there. I have little concept of this on other forums.

I would still like to see images out in the Fish sections though.

I will Sticky and Lock a couple of topics;
Photo of the Month Rather than this being on a submission basis, I plan to choose an image that was posted during the month ended. (I'm going to backdate a month or two to kick it off)
The Best of Aquatic Babble. (a larger and expanded version of the slideshow)

Plus some friendly competition stuff, "unusual shot", "funniest", etc.

Nothing in concrete. Any ideas welcome.

Find that "Camera Talk" thread.

There's some links and other ideas we posted, for when Monkeh was looking for a camera.
