i was having a close look at my angels tonight. when viewed directly front on there appears to be a subtle but noticeable difference in body thickness.

i am fairly confident that my marbel angel is the female, partly as she seemed to be showing a breeding tube the other day after they had laid eggs plus when i look at her front on her lower body is fuller than the black and silver males. a bit like the difference u get in male and female corys when viewed from above. in my angels the male tapers away from mid body to tail where as the female seems to be almost as full and as rounded in her lower body as she does the top.

here is a rough drawing showing what i mean ...

good luck at sexing angels i think they are one of the most hardest of fish to sex i was once told the best way to try was to look at them head on this is where the abdomon theory comes in the female is supposed to have a more rounded belly & having bred angels in the past yes i will agree with this theory in principal but i will also say it aint foolproof the best way to get a pair is to buy at least 6 fish at the same time that way you maybe stand a good chance of getting a pair

fishy thought i would bring this back under your drawing Very Happy

lol, i knew i'd read that but now that i know which of mine is male and which is female and looking at them front on, there is a small but noticeable difference.

looking at them straight on will work for people with mature angels i guess that arent sure which are male and female or perhaps if one is to buy mature fish from the LFS, although it might take a lot of tank staring to see which is which and by the time the shop keeper has got his net ... Laughing

this was the method i used to use but i will say it is not fool proof but i found that it was a good starting point although i did get it wrong from time to time i did end up thinking that the only ones who could get it right were the angel fish themselves Wink
