Well, apparantly my Discus are happy with their living conditions. The two I've had the longest (the leopard and the blue diamond) are officially a mated pair.

They've been tight the whole time - always together...chase off others when they want to be alone etc.

Anyway, the last few days I'd noticed them pecking at a large log in the tank. Although I've never spawned Discus before, I have spawned some fish and recognized this as a spawning behavior.

So today (immediately after a 50% water change) I was watching the tank and noticed they were taking turns making passes over the log. They were obviously dry runs since there were no eggs. Regardless, I was happy about it because I know that means they're mature, healthy & happy with their conditions.

About 10 minutes later I came back & looked again. The log was covered with eggs. I didn't get any 'good' pictures, but here are a couple that came out ok...

As it turns out, the leopard is the female and the blue diamond is the male - just the opposite of what I thought.

They laid probably 100 to 200 eggs - a big cluster. As is pretty normal with juveniles - they didn't know what they were doing. So this morning I woke up & the eggs were gone. They'll get the hang of it.

My concern is that if I do get babies, I won't have the time to devote to raising them.

So if anyone knows someone who'd want to do the 3 x daily water changes and raise some discus...I may eventually have some. I'd be willing to let the whole spawns go pretty cheaply to someone who'd take good care in raising them.

Anyway - cool! How fun.
