Yeah, I saw the vent on the back for the reverse flow. Is there any kind of pre filter sponge I could attach to the bottom intake? I wouldn't have it on an undergravel filter, so the bottom intake would be left open.

I was siphoning for a water change a few weeks back, and our male Black Molly got pulled up to the mouth of the tube, catching him sideways. I could feel the force of it, back along the tube to my hand.
He seemed ok later, although I wasn't too sure if I'd seen 'something' on his side a few days later. Anyway, a week to 10 days after the event, and we haven't seen him since...
