How do you tell if a snails dead or not? my little black snail has been laying upside down with the top of the shell on the gravel and his fleshy part sticking up, but he's fully withdrawn into the shell, so all you can see is the end roundish part. He hasn't moved that I can tell really in atleast 20 hours. So does that mean he's dead? or, just taking a long siesta or what?

Personaly i would say it sounds like your snail is dead, but i have never kept apple snails before, but going by your snail has not moved for 20 hours then i think it is safe to assume the worst, how are your water stats ?

Well, the snail ended up being still alive.. I've never seen a non-hibernating animal sleep or lay still for so long. It was really kind of scary and freaky.
