Hi folks! Nice to meet you! I have had fish for years now, originally starting back in around 1994. I currently have a 125 gal saltwater tank, but I'm not here to talk about that one. Just last week I started a 33 gal freshwater tank. I've had freshwater tanks before and they turned out nicely. I did discus once, an oscar once and a cichlid once. This time, however, I ended up picking up two small "sea bass".

Alright, here is where the questions start. First of all, I have no idea what sort of "sea bass" they are. I don't even know for sure that they ARE "sea bass". They could be baby stripers for all I know. The fish store where I bought them didn't know much about them other than calling them "sea bass". I'll post a picture of them later and hopefully someone can tell me what they are exactly.

Now, here is what I know about them. They are agressive, of course, and they will grow to be a decent size, I am sure. Right now they are maybe 2.5 inches long. I am currently feeding them bloodworms and tiny guppies. Beyond that, I don't really know any specifics. Will a 33 gallon tank be large enough to hold them both in the future? Or will I need to move them to something bigger? Will they even be able to live together or will I need to get them separate tanks? How aggressive will they be? As aggressive as my oscar was? More? Less? Is there anything special that these "sea bass" would enjoy? A particular kind of plant maybe? A particular food other than your general feeders?

I do know a little about fish, so I'm not completely lost (I don't think), but I have to admit that when it comes to details specific to these particular "sea bass", I am clueless. Maybe that should have been a reason not to get them, but I'm confident that I can keep them happy and healthy if I can just learn a few things about them.

Thanks in advance for your time and responses.

Right without a pic at this moment it will be impossible to id your fish as there are a fair few bass to chose from, which also means at this time that i am unfortunatly able to answer any of your questions that you want the answers too Embarassed So i will wait untill you get some pics up Wink

Alright, I don't have time to take a picture and put it up right now, but I can give you a very brief and general description. They have two dorsal fins, the forward-most of which is very spiney and sort of serrated or jagged looking. They have a broad (relatively) white (or silver) stripe running up the middle of their heads. They bodies are mostly a grey-ish silvery color with mottled black spots (in no particular pattern, that I can tell). Does that help at all? Probably not. The only thing that I think may help is the white (or silver) stripe that (as you're looking at the fish) runs from its mouth over the middle of its head to the dorsal fins.

Most probably is a peacock bass. It's the most readily available of the bass.

Thanks, that is what someone else (another fish store guy) guessed, as well. Is that consistant with the description I gave? I looked for pictures of peacock bass, but only found pictures of adults, and I am not sure that these have adult coloring/markings yet.

Could do with a picture if you can post one, as it would make identifiying much easier

Okay, I have posted three pix of my fish in the "What's my fish?" forum. The pix aren't great, but maybe it can give you a good enough idea.

Alright, it turns out that my two unidentified fish are actually barramundi - Lates calcarifer. I'm trying to do a little reading on these now. Anyone have any experience with these or any advice on care, etc.?
