Alright, here are two pictures of my fish that I have been trying to identify. I posted in the lounge last week under the topic "New Freshwater Fish Tank in Ohio". The pictures aren't fantastic, but maybe they can help. The fish are small and the camera isn't great.

((Edit: I forgot to mention that the fish are maybe 2.5 ~ 3 inches long now))

In this first picture you can see the dorsal fin better.

The second picture is even worse. The dorsal fin is down and the picture is fuzzy, but maybe it will help, I don't know.

In neither of these two pictures can you see the broad white strip that travels from the mouth over the middle of the head to the dorsal fin, so I have included a third, much blurrier picture just to show that.

Don't mind the giant flowers behind the tank. Those are merely wallpaper on the wall behind the tank and they won't be there for long. I just bought this house and that is what was on the wall in this room when I got here.

Yeah, I didn't think so either after looking at some pix of juvenile peacock bass today. It does look like a bass though, right?

The white stripe is easily the most prominent feature on both fish, but I haven't found a single thing that mentions that sort of marking.

I can't say whether it's a bass or not. This one has me stumped for the moment.

I don't mind that much not knowing what they are (although I am very curious). Really, my two biggest concerns are that (1) I am able to take care of them properly (since I don't know any specifics on them) and (2) that they become the type of fish that I wanted to have in the first place. If they are just going to hang out in my tank and not grow very big or not be very aggressive, I'd rather know now so I can just go and get an oscar or an arowana or something. I wouldn't totally give up on these two unidentified fish, but I'd get something more along the lines of what I was looking for in the first place.

Here's another pic, although I am not sure it will help much.

I found this picture on one site. I don't think it's the same fish (the dorsal fins look different) but it has a similar sripe down it's face. It may be related to your fish.

It has similar markings and fins. I looked at some pictures of sea bass, and I noticed the caudal fins were a different shape. This grouper had the same caudal fin shape though. Groupers are in the same family as sea bass, so it could have been mistaken for one.

This fish actually does look pretty similar. Is this a saltwater fish, though? Do you suppose my fish could maybe be a freshwater variation of the species or something related? I'm not really sure how that works.

I have to admit, of all the people that I have asked and all the responses they have given, this one probably looks the closest right now in both color scheme and structure. I think there is a chance you may be onto something here.

To be honest i dont think the pics do the fish any justice as it is very hard to see it clearly, but i will say it is deffinatly not a peacock bass. Not sure that there is a fresh water variation though

Its not a sea bass if its freshwater. The links that bettina posted are for saltwater fish.

Alright, so I finally figured out what my fish are. This guy emailed me today saying that he had figured it out. He gave me the name of the fish that he thought they were, and I googled them. After looking at the first couple pictures of adults, I was pretty sure he was wrong. However, then I came across some pictures of juveniles.

(I would up load them but I am having trouble with uploading pics for some reason)

These pictures prove to me that my my fish are what he says they are. My fish look exactly like the pictures of the juveniles that I have found. I am certain this guy was correct.

So what are they? Barramundi - Lates calcarifer

Alright, it is working for me today, so here are the pictures of juvenile barramundi that I found which look exactly like my two fish.

Now that they are identified, I suppose I should start up a new thread in a different area asking what in the world I should do with them.
