ok.. my Betta is now starting to turn white.. sections of the top of his head, and gills are becoming like white white.. and small patches are forming on the sides down along him. Not to mention, his top fin.. there seems to be several of them are turning this odd pinkish color.. Any clue or idea what it could be? |

Can you post a picture ? It sounds as though it could be.
NEON TETRA DISEASE
Caused by: Infection by the parasite Pleistophora
Obvious symptoms: Loss of colouration, strange swimming behaviour, curvature of the spine, fin rot and emaciation Note it is not just neon tetras that suffer from this disease as many species are susceptible to this its just tetras appear to be very susceptible, zebra danios and some barbs are commonly affected by a similar disease.
Occurrence of the disease: Keeping fish in any thing less than good quality conditions is believed to trigger this disease off.
Treatment and Control: There are no effective treatments that I know of apart from euthanasia. Best controlled by a well maintained aquarium. _________________ the only stupid questions are the ones you dont ask

Unfortunatly every now and then fish seem to get a disease, for no aparant reason. Has the fish been stressed in any way ? _________________ the only stupid questions are the ones you dont ask

No.. none really. I don't think the lose of the snail would have been stressful.. Only had him in the tank like 2 weeks. Other then that, nothing really. the fish is happy to see us, there's no real temp flux.. Occasionaly he'll only get feed once a day. But thats not really bad stress wise on a betta.. so no, pretty normal really |

I remember now you posted about it I cant help thinking that the loss of the snail might have caused the problem with the betta _________________ the only stupid questions are the ones you dont ask

ok.. so apperntly my beta does have Neon Disease.. he's got a real curved spine now.. but before I off him. I wanted to know.. how long can a fish live with it? And, will he be in pain? Will it be hurtfull. I mean I dont know.. and if it's gonna be anguishing and what not. Then, I'll have to pujt him to sleep.. and if I do, what are the best ways to put a fish to sleep? Cause, I cant do anything harsh like leave him out of the water, or flush a living creature down the toilet, or something like that. |

ok.. so I have to murder my fish.. What about my Biofilter? It's not replacible.. and the spores of NTD would most likely be in the filter.. So, what would I have to do? Do I have to throw the whole filter unit out, and buy a new $20 unit? or what? |

I have had to euthanise a few fish because of ntd, but I have never replaced anything because of it. Get rid of the problem fish asap and you shouldn't have too many problems. |
